1: \begin{abstract}

2: This overview paper is intended as a quick introduction to Lie algebras

3: of vector fields. Originally introduced in the late 19th century by

4: Sophus Lie to capture symmetries of ordinary differential equations,

5: these algebras, or {\em infinitesimal groups}, are a recurring theme in

6: 20th-century research on Lie algebras. I will focus on so-called {\em

7: transitive} or even {\em primitive} Lie algebras, and explain their

8: theory due to Lie, Morozov, Dynkin, Guillemin, Sternberg, Blattner, and

9: others. This paper gives just one, subjective overview of the subject,

10: without trying to be exhaustive.
