2: Implications of the Raychaudhuri equation in focusing of geodesic congruence is studied in the framework of scalar-tensor gravity. Brans-Dicke theory and  Bekenstein's scalar field  theories are picked up for investigation. A static spherically symmetric distribution and a spatially homogeneous and isotropic cosmological model are dealt with in both the theories as specific examples. It is found that even for very reasonable physical conditions, there are possibilities for a violation of the convergence condition leading to a possibility of avoiding a singularity.
