2:   This chapter presents some of the links between automata theory and

3: symbolic dynamics. The emphasis is on two particular points. The

4: first one is the interplay between some particular classes of

5: automata, such as local automata and results on embeddings

6: of shifts of finite type. The second one is the connection between

7: syntactic semigroups and the classification of sofic shifts

8: up to conjugacy.
