2:   We derive a numerical algorithm for evaluating 

3:   the Riemannian logarithm on the Stiefel manifold

4:   with respect to the canonical metric.

5:   In contrast to the existing  optimization-based approach,

6:   we work from a purely matrix-algebraic perspective.

7:   Moreover, we prove that the algorithm converges locally and
