1: \begin{abstract}

2: This paper makes a comprehensive survey of results relating to finite

3: Rees index for semigroups. In particular, we survey of the state of

4: knowledge on whether various finiteness properties (such as finite

5: generation, finite presentability, automaticity, and hopficity) are

6: inherited by finite Rees index subsemigroups and extensions. We survey

7: other properties that are invariant under passing to finite Rees index

8: subsemigroups and extensions, such as the cofinality and number of

9: ends. We prove some new results: inheritance of word-hyperbolicity by

10: finite Rees index subsemigroups, and inheritance of (geometric)

11: hyperbolicity by finite Rees index extensions and subsemigroups within

12: the class of monoids of finite geometric type. We also give some

13: improved counterexamples. All the results are summarized in a table.
