1: \begin{abstract}

2: This chapter introduces and elaborates on the fruitful interplay of

3: coding theory and algebraic combinatorics, with most of the focus on

4: the interaction of codes with combinatorial designs, finite

5: geometries, simple groups, sphere packings, kissing numbers,

6: lattices, and association schemes. In particular, special interest

7: is devoted to the relationship between codes and combinatorial

8: designs. We describe and recapitulate important results in the

9: development of the state of the art. In addition, we give

10: illustrative examples and constructions, and highlight recent

11: advances. Finally, we provide a collection of significant open

12: problems and challenges concerning future research.
