2: By proving a local limit theorem for higher-order transitions, we determine
3: the time required for
4: \textit{necklace chains} to be close to stationarity. Because necklace chains,
5: built by arranging identical smaller chains around a directed cycle,
6: are not reversible, have little symmetry, do not have uniform stationary
7: distributions, and can be nearly periodic, prior general bounds on rates of
8: convergence of Markov chains either do not apply or give poor bounds. Necklace
9: chains can serve as test cases for future techniques for bounding rates of
10: convergence.
