2: We describe an algorithm for computing Schur

3: indices of irreducible characters of a finite group $G$,

4: based on computations within $G$ and its subgroups and with

5: their character tables.

6: The algorithm has been implemented within \Magma\ and

7: examples of its use are given. We also compare the output of the algorithm

8: on groups associated with sporadic simple groups with the results of W. Feit.

9: The differences are considered.
