2: We introduce a novel heuristic global optimization method, 

3: energy landscape paving (ELP), which combines

4: core ideas from energy surface deformation and tabu search.

5: In appropriate limits, ELP reduces to existing techniques.

6: The approach is very general and flexible and is illustrated here

7: on two protein folding problems.  For these examples, the technique 

8: gives faster convergence

9: to the global minimum than previous approaches.
