2:  We study the

3:  homology of $\cPn$, the commutator subgroup of the pure braid group on $n$ strands, and

4:  show that $H_l(\cPn)$ contains a free abelian group of infinite rank for all

5:  $1\leq l\leq n-2$. As a consequence we determine the cohomological dimension of $\cPn$:

6:  for $n\geq 2$ we have $\cd(\cPn)=n-2$.
