2: We show how to obtain the photon distribution of a single-mode field

3: using only avalanche photodetectors. The method is based on measuring

4: the field at different quantum efficiencies and then inferring the

5: photon distribution by maximum-likelihood estimation. The convergence

6: of the method and its robustness against fluctuations are illustrated

7: by means of numerically simulated experiments.
