1: \begin{abstract}

2: We update the extraction of $\vert V_{us}\vert$ from hadronic $\tau$ decay

3: data in light of recent BaBar and Belle results on 

4: the branching fractions of a number of important strange decay modes. 

5: A range of sum rule analyses is performed, particular attention being 

6: paid to those based on ``non-spectral weights'', developed previously 

7: to bring the slow convergence of the relevant integrated $D=2$ OPE series 

8: under improved control.  Results from the various sum rules are shown

9: to be in good agreement with one another, but $\sim 3\sigma$ below 

10: expectations based on 3-family unitarity. Important avenues for future 

11: study are briefly discussed.
