2:   We study discontinuous Galerkin approximations of the

3:   $p$--biharmonic equation from a variational perspective. We propose

4:   a discrete variational formulation of the problem based on a

5:   appropriate definition of a finite element Hessian and

6:   study convergence of the method (without rates) using a weak lower

7:   semicontinuity argument.

9:   We present numerical experiments aimed at testing the robustness of

10:   the method. We also note a superconvergence effect for some values

11:   of $p$.
