2: This expository article gives two proofs of Minkowski's theorem

3: determining the least common multiple of the orders of all finite

4: subgroups of $\GL_n(\QQ)$ and of Schur's generalization of this

5: result. In the main, we follow the original articles of Minkowski

6: and Schur; a novel feature of our presentation is a proof of Schur's

7: theorem by Minkowski's reduction method.
