3: Given the interest in relating the large $N$ limit of

4: $SU(N)$ to groups of area-preserving diffeomorphisms,

5: we consider the topologies of these groups and show that

6: both in terms of homology and homotopy, they are

7: extremely different. Similar conclusions are drawn for

8: other infinite dimensional classical groups.
