2:   We propose a fully discretised numerical scheme

3:   for the hyperelastic rod wave equation on the

4:   line. The convergence of the method is

5:   established. Moreover, the scheme can handle the

6:   blow-up of the derivative which naturally occurs

7:   for this equation. By using a time splitting

8:   integrator which preserves the invariants of the

9:   problem, we can also show that the scheme preserves

10:   the positivity of the energy density.
