2: We suggest a geometrical framework to discuss

3: periodic layered structures in the unit disk.

4: The band gaps appear when the point representing

5: the system approaches the unit circle. We show

6: that the trace of the matrix describing the basic

7: period allows for a classification in three families

8: of orbits with quite different properties. The laws

9: of convergence of the iterates to the unit circle

10: can be then considered as universal features of

11: the reflection.
