2: We consider a {\em homological} enlargement of the mapping class

3: group, defined by {\em homology cylinders} over a closed oriented

4: surface (up to homology cobordism). These are important model objects

5: in the recent Goussarov-Habiro theory of finite-type invariants of

6: $3$-manifolds. We study the structure of this group from several

7: directions: the relative weight filtration of Dennis Johnson, the

8: finite-type filtration of Goussarov-Habiro, and the relation to string

9: link concordance.

11: We also consider a new {\em Lagrangian} filtration of both the mapping class

12: group and the group of homology cylinders.
