2: We present a preconditioning method for the multi-dimensional

3: Helmholtz equation with smoothly varying coefficient.

4: The method is based on a frame of functions, that approximately 

5: separates components associated with different singular values

6: of the operator. For the small singular values, corresponding

7: to propagating waves, the frame functions are constructed

8: using ray-theory. A series of 2-D numerical experiments 

9: demonstrates that the number of iterations required for convergence 

10: is small and independent of the frequency. In this sense the method 

11: is optimal.
