2: We discuss the nature of the different ground states 

3: of the half-filled Holstein model of spinless fermions in 1D. 

4: In the metallic regime we determine the renormalised effective 

5: coupling constant and the velocity of the charge excitations 

6: by a density-matrix renormalisation group (DMRG) finite-size scaling approach.

7: At low (high) phonon frequencies the Luttinger liquid is characterised

8: by an attractive (repulsive) effective interaction. 

9: In the charge-density wave Peierls-distorted state the 

10: charge structure factor scales to a finite 

11: value indicating long-range order.
