2: We describe calculations of $c \overline c$

3: production to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) and next-to-next-to-leading

4: logarithm (NNLL) near threshold in $pp$ and $\pi^- p$ interactions.

5: We study the relevance of these calculations for existing $c \overline c$

6: total cross section data by examining their sensitivity to partonic

7: threshold kinematics, their convergence properties and scale dependence.
